How to Know if You Need Transmission Repair in Chicago

by | Feb 17, 2018 | Transmission Repair | 0 comments

car-transmissionThe more that you use your automobile, the more wear and tear it takes on. Each and every vehicle component withstands some abuse, and will eventually need to be repaired or replaced. Your transmission is no exception to this.

What you need to do is monitor this deterioration and act quickly when repairs or replacements are needed. Failure to do so can result in even more detrimental damage.

But how will you know if you need transmission repair in Chicago? By being cognizant of these signs:

Signs Your Transmission Needs Repair

  1. Gear-Shifting is Difficult

It doesn’t matter whether you drive a car with an automatic or manual transmission. If you have to exert a great deal of effort just to shift gears, the problem likely lies with your transmission.

A transmission which is having trouble shifting gears can have one of two problems. The most likely problem is that its fluid is no longer getting the job done. Because it’s not properly lubricated, it’s doing everything roughly instead of smoothly.

The other, more rare problem is that the transmission has deteriorated mechanically and can no longer perform its function the way that it once did. In either case, you’d be well-served by bringing your car into a Chicago transmission repair company.

  1. Transmission Fluid is Burnt

As with the rest of your car, you should be checking in on your transmission periodically. You want to make sure that its components are not damaged, and that its transmission fluid is still thriving.

Transmission fluid typically thrives for somewhere between 30,000 miles and 60,000 miles of use. But at some point when it’s been overused, it will start to burn up and become sludgy.

Sludgy, burnt transmission fluid will not provide the lubrication needed by your transmission. You’ll need to flush it out and replace it with new fluid.

  1. An Overwhelming Burning Smell

Because they make use of high heat, automobiles are prone to emitting burning smells. These smells can come from a variety of sources with one such source being the transmission.

Transmission burning smells often come as a result of fluid which is past its change date. The longer that transmission fluid is used, the more and more burnt it becomes. Eventually, this burning presents itself as an unpleasant odor.

If your car is releasing a burning smell, you should at least check your transmission fluid to see if it’s the culprit.

  1. Gear Slipping

One of the sure signs that your transmission is in need of attention is if your gears are slipping while you drive.

Gear slipping occurs when your vehicle is attempting to change gears, and will usually result in a delayed or jerky motion. In a sense, you’ll almost feel as if you’re temporarily losing control of your vehicle.

The typical reason for gear slipping is that your transmission fluid is no longer lubricating in the manner that it’s supposed to be. Changing said fluid will likely get your vehicle back to normal.

  1. Lack of Accelerator Responsiveness

One last sign that your transmission might require repair is if you’re stepping on the gas, but getting a delayed reaction. The reason for a delayed reaction when stepping on the gas typically lies in the fact that your transmission is not properly lubricated.

Instead of just working in tandem together, the gears of your transmission provide resistance against each other, not always responding instantly when they’re told to.

Generally, adding some new transmission fluid will set these gears back to normal.
