Transmission fluid is anything but short-lived. In fact, compared to other automotive fluids, it’s designed to last for quite a long time. However, this isn’t to say that transmission fluid in Chicago has an infinite lifespan. It does wear down over time, and it does eventually need to be replaced with fresh fluid.

Generally, transmission fluid should last for between 30,000 and 60,000 miles of use. Once it hits this point, it gradually loses its efficacy.

Indications That it’s Time for a Replacement

While you can generally expect to replace your transmission fluid after 30,000 to 60,000 miles of driving, it’s wise to look for certain indications that your transmission fluid is no longer getting the job done. Here are some indications that it’s time for a replacement.

The Fluid is Black

Take a look at your transmission fluid. Does it possess a black or brown color? If so, it’s likely due for a change.

Transmission fluid is supposed to be a dark red color. However, as it gets cycled through your transmission, it can become burnt, taking on a darker color. Transmission fluid that is burnt does not provide the same level of lubrication as transmission fluid that is fresh. If this is the case for you, we recommend having it changed as soon as possible.

The Fluid is Sludgy

Another way to tell that your transmission fluid is no longer getting the job done is by gauging its texture. Transmission fluid is, of course, a fluid. As such, it should be smooth.

If your transmission fluid is not smooth, but sludgy instead, it has likely passed its expiration date. In this case, it’s wise to have it flushed and replaced with fresh fluid sooner rather than later.

The Fluid Smells Burnt

As noted above, over time, transmission fluid can become burnt. This burning effect presents itself not only visually, but aromatically as well. Therefore, if you smell a burning aroma coming from your vehicle, your transmission fluid could very well be due for a change.

Be aware, however, that burning aromas can come from a number of different places in your vehicle. Your transmission is just one of the places you should be checking.

Your Car Hesitates When Shifting

If your car has an automatic transmission, shifting gears should feel seamless. You shouldn’t feel a significant hesitation or delay as your vehicle increases speeds. If you are feeling this type of hesitation, the problem likely lies in your transmission fluid.

Hesitation often occurs because your transmission fluid isn’t providing the level of lubrication that it’s designed to provide. It’s likely overused and in need of a change.

Your Transmission is Making StrangeNoises

One last way to detect a problem with your transmission fluid is to listen for specific noises. If your transmission is making whining noises, it is more than likely filled with bad fluid. This fluid should be replaced with fresh fluid as soon as possible.

Other transmission noises, such as clunking or grinding, are typically indicative of structural problems within the transmission itself. If you hear these noises, it is wise to have your vehicle looked at by a transmission specialist as soon as possible. He or she should be able to find the problem and perform any necessary repairs.
